THE dangers of crossing a road can usually be avoided if you stop, look and listen.
However, the Green Cross Code mentions nothing about gazing skywards or ducking to escape falling objects that may cause serious injury.
Paula Collins, from Sudbury, could be excused for checking nervously over her shoulder after surviving an unexpected hazard as she attempted to negotiate a crossing in the road.
The 29-year-old was returning to work after lunch at her home in Cross Street last Tuesday when she heard a loud crash.
To her astonishment, after turning around to investigate, she discovered an entire lamp fitting from a street light lying directly behind her.
“It had fallen a good five or six metres,” said Mrs Collins, who works as a textile designer at Vanners Silks in Sudbury.
“I was completely shocked and very shaken up. It could have killed me – I was just dumbfounded.”
