South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge will be backing Theresa May to be the Conservative Party’s new leader.

Mr Cartlidge said: “I will be supporting Theresa May in the election for the next leader of the Conservative Party. I believe that in these uncertain and challenging times we need a leader who will be trusted to put the stability and wellbeing of the nation above all else.

“In my view, Theresa May is the best person to deliver that type of leadership. She showed over Hillsborough her ability to handle highly charged issues that go way beyond normal party politics.

“Her management of the toughest department in Government, the Home Office, has been exemplary in the pure sense of competence and credibility which is actually the hardest day to day challenge when running the country.

“From people I have spoken to in my constituency from all parties it is clear that Theresa May commands respect on all sides as a serious politician trusted to take big decisions.

“Finally, as far as Conservative party members are concerned, nobody is going to change the fact that our country voted for Brexit, and the duty of all of us is to elect the leader best placed to serve the national interest and inspire goodwill and trust with our European partners, so that in turn we can achieve a positive basis for negotiation. I am confident that person is Theresa May.”
