Chinese lanterns and sky lanterns have been banned by Essex County Council.

Following a similar move by Babergh District Council in September, the authority has banned the release of lanterns from any council-owned building or land. Anyone caught doing so will be asked to leave.

The council is also urging people not to use the lanterns anywhere in the county to help protect the environment.

The move has been introduced to prevent the threat of fires, danger to wildlife and unnecessary litter.

It follows concerns raised by farmers, residents and rural business leaders about the dangers posed by lanterns.
