Shop plan for Great Cornard pub sparks new protest

Residents and parish councillors have expressed renewed objections at plans to demolish a Great Cornard pub and build a food store in its place.

Punch Taverns, owner of the 18th-century Highbury Barn in Canhams Road, has submitted plans to build a £1million, 325-square-metre retail unit on the site.

The plans state that the redevelopment of the site could provide as many as 35 full and part-time jobs, to be filled by people from the nearby area.

An application to demolish the pub was submitted in August, sparking online and paper petitions attracting more than 200 signatures.
