A jewellery thief has been jailed for six years for a string of 90 burglaries across Suffolk and Norfolk.

Billy Smith, 26, of no fixed address, was charged with three counts of burglary relating to incidents in Shelley, near Hadleigh, and in Ipswich. Various items of jewellery were stolen.

He was arrested, charged and remanded in custody before appearing in court when he pleaded guilty to the three offences.

Last month, at Ipswich Crown Court, the judge was also asked to consider a further 87 offences committed across both counties, which Smith had admitted being responsible for, and these were all accepted by the court.

Detective Inspector Barry Byford said: “Officers in both counties have worked tirelessly to locate Smith and bring him before the courts, where he has admitted responsibility for a very large number of crimes.”
