Although many people do not like the thought of change, it seems that one village is changing in more ways than one.

Bulmer, near Gestingthorpe, has now suddenly become Blumer.

Helen and Trevor Willingham spotted the inaccuracy on a sign at the crossroads at Gestingthorpe near where they live in Sudbury Road and sent the Free Press a photograph.

Helen said: “Someone in the pub mentioned it. I don’t know how long it’s been like it because most of us don’t really look at place signs very much – we know where we are going most of the time.

“It’s actually on both sides of the sign so its consistently wrong. It’s quite funny really.”

Braintree District Council said road signage was the responsibility of the highway authority at Essex County Council.

But a spokeswoman said she was aware that there had been an issue with some signage recently being printed the wrong way round.

Mike Crome, chairman of Bulmer Parish Council, said: “It looks to me as though the letters are screwed on, so it should be easy to correct. I will send this to the Gestingthorpe clerk for action, unless of course it is a practical joke.”

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: “We are aware of the situation and will take the right measures to correct it as soon as possible.”
