HIS name is Darren Russell, but he prefers to be called Rocky.
And if you see him running around Sudbury, pulling three car tyres on a rope behind him, do not worry, he knows what he is doing.
The tyre pull is part of a rigorous training programme which he does once a week.
Starting in Sudbury town centre, where he lives, he runs along Melford Road, on to the eastern bypass to Springlands, past Tesco, to Northern Road and back into town via Newton Road for five miles.
His weekly regime also includes two sessions at Sudbury Boxing Club, circuit running and at least two trips to the gym.
The 40-year-old says he is “battling the bulge” and is getting even fitter than he already is to take part in a charity event in the future.
The sight of him pulling tyres on a rope tied round his waist has been a talking point and lots of people have stopped to watch him. One of his friends has taken a video of him and plans to put it on the internet site YouTube.
He said: “I have been a member of Sudbury Boxing Club for 28 years and I’m pretty fit from the boxing but I decided for personal reasons to get even fitter.
“I am fighting the middle-aged spread now I have reached 40.
“I’m really keen to do something for charity and am looking at how I could raise some money with a challenge. “People are amazed by me pulling the tyres around the town to keep fit and there’s lots of talk about it.”
Rocky, who is a carpenter by trade, was in a boxing squad in the Army in the early 1990s.
