The new chief constable of Suffolk Police has been officially appointed.

Gareth Wilson has landed the top job after serving in the role on a temporary basis since February.

He had been filling in for Douglas Paxton, who recently retired following a lengthy period of sick leave.

Mr Wilson was confirmed for the role by the Police and Crime Panel on Wednesday.

He was selected by police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore and an appointments panel following an interview on December 18.

He said: “I’m very proud to be the new chief constable for Suffolk. It is a great privilege to lead such a dynamic and flexible organisation. Over the past year I have worked closely with the police and crime commissioner to develop plans to transform the police service in Suffolk.

“I am delighted to now be in a position to lead the constabulary through these changes to meet the challenges ahead.”
