A councillor has been suspended by his party after taking the decision to carry on in his position despite moving 4,000 miles to America.

Brian Riley, who represents Hadleigh on Suffolk County Council, has been criticised by council leader Mark Bee for not resigning from his seat, despite moving to Raleigh in North Carolina.

Mr Riley has reportedly said he is perfectly able to carry on a role that will not come up for re-election until 2017.

It is believed he plans to fly across to the UK every six weeks to carry out his council duties and continued business interests, using the internet to keep in touch with his constituents.

Mr Riley has, however, had the Conservative whip withdrawn, while council leader Mark Bee confirmed he had been suspended, saying he and council chief executive Deborah Cadman hoped to meet Mr Riley, at which point he will be asked to resign.
