X-FACTOR winner Matt Cardle’s debut album lost out in the battle for top spot on Sunday.
The Little Maplestead singer and former painter and decorator’s ‘Letters’ was beaten by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ eponymous debut, which sold 120,000 copies, around 40 per cent more than Cardle.
His second single, ‘Run For Your Life’, which charted at number six the previous week, had slumped to number 23.
Matt’s father, David Cardle, said: “He is really happy. Matt was home on Sunday for dinner and a catch-up, and he was absolutely delighted.
“His words were ‘second to a legend like Noel Gallagher, come on!’. Matt is very pleased to be where he is and it will be nice for him to stick around the top ten for a while and have steady sales.
“He wants to thank all the fans and supporters as it’s them who buy the cds and downloads,” added Mr Cardle.
