A man has been told to pay nearly £1,000 for throwing a cigarette butt from his car.

Mark Finlay, from Bells Hill, Mount Bures, was seen depositing a cigarette from his vehicle on August 4 last year.

Initially, the 24-year-old was issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice but disputed the offence and pleaded not guilty by post.

Finlay failed to attend his hearing at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was found guilty in his absence.

He was fined £400 and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £540, plus a victim surcharge of £40.

After the hearing, Braintree district councillor Wendy Schmitt said the authority would look to prosecute anyone caught littering.
