A 41-year-old man was shot in the head, neck and hand by an air rifle at his home in Little Cornard on Friday evening.
He opened the door to his home in Chapel Lane at around 7pm to let his dog out when he heard several shots and was then hit by pellets.
The man went back into his house and heard a car drive off. He then called the ambulance service and was taken to Colchester Hospital where he received treatment for minor injuries.
Police would like to hear from anyone who was near Chapel Lane and noticed any suspicious activity or saw a car leaving the area at around the time of the attack.
