Work due to start on BMX track

YOUNGSTERS who lobbied a council to get a BMX and mountain bike track in their village are about to see their dreams realised, writes Anne Wise.

After four years of talks between the land owner, Clare Town Council and the village’s youth group, the project is finally making headway. A lease on a field next to the town council’s two-acre Clare Nuttery site has been signed and a digger will arrive in four weeks’ time to begin work.

Originally, 10 young riders approached the town council for help in finding somewhere that they could use for riding their bikes and doing jumps.

Despite finding a landowner who agreed they could use a site near Clare Nuttery, the project stalled in the pursuit of planning permission.

Another move to get the BMX track up and running was started by more youngsters last year, giving the project a new lease of life.

Clare Youth Association secretary Steve Brooks said: “In 2011, a new group of youngsters got together and raised a petition in support of more facilities for the young people of Clare.

“With the help and support of the town council, a new committee was formed.

“Steps were put in place so that the young people on the committee could start to raise funds for their chosen projects.”

The committee has members aged from 11 upwards and its main purpose is to represent the needs and views of the young people of the town.

“A purpose-built skate park is a major undertaking and would cost many tens of thousands of pounds, so the committee was really pleased to hear this much smaller project was still a possibility.

“Many details needed to be sorted and discussed, which were all new to the committee, but were all resolved with the lease being signed by the town council on September 9, which is great news.”

Mr Brooks said the association welcomed any ideas from young people in Clare and would welcome support on the committee from young people and parents. You can email secretary@cyacweb.co.uk.
