Weekend Thought by Robert Fish

PEOPLE are not always what they seem. Take the case of Susan Boyle, the star of Britain's Got Talent.

She may not have won the final, but who can forget the shock on the faces of the judges and audience as she won them over with that terrific voice?

No doubt part of her appeal and popularity lies in the fact she that seemed, on the face of it, to be an ordinary middle-aged woman who defied expectations. Her appearance belied what she could do.

Today, image is seen as an important part of our identity and unfair judgments are often made on the basis of appearance.

By the same token, we might assume that someone of pleasant appearance has qualities that, in reality, they do not possess.

But 1 Samuel 16:7 reminds us that “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Susan Boyle’s life will no doubt change, but I hope she doesn’t. As well as having the support of her community, Susan also has the support of her church and her Christian faith.

No doubt those who want to make Susan Boyle into a star will try to give her an image makeover but, it will always be who she is on the inside that really matters.
