Weekend Thought by Godfrey C Miller

THE old saying "Cometh the hour cometh the man" is uppermost in the thinking of many people as Barack Obama takes up residence in the White House.

But it's not just America that has high expectations, the world at large has real hope that he will bring stability to so many needy areas.

Great men everywhere, throughout the generations, have arisen to serve their countries well, and we watch with keen interest as this new president gets down to work.

It is said of Abraham Lincoln that on one occasion he felt almost overwhelmed with the pressures of office. He wrote afterwards: "I fell to my knees in prayer with a deep sense upon me that I had nowhere else to go."

Wise is any president who can follow his example. The Bible says: "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, all who follow his precepts have good understanding."

It's not just presidents and prime ministers though, who need the particular wisdom that only God can give. We all do!

Here is how the Bible puts it: "If any of you lacks wisdom he should ask God who gives generously to all."

Contrary to accepted belief, wise heads can be upon young shoulders when teenagers trust the Lord and obey his word. Parents with the wisdom of God in their hearts find help to guide their families and lawless men return to living meaningful lives.

Some may be saying: "But how do we get this?"

We recognise primarily that the wisdom God gives is more than the general acquisition of knowledge.

It begins when by faith we believe in the death of His Son for us and take the forgiveness He offers … and we build from there.

Wise men, we are told in the gospels, came looking for Jesus. Wise men and women still do.
