Weekend Thought by Ray Delaney
SPECK. A speck is something minute. The only time "speck" appears in the Bible is when Jesus tells us to take the plank out of our own eye so that we can see clearly to remove the speck from our brother's eye. Timeless advice.
At President Obama’s inauguration an aerial view of the vast crowd stretching from the Capitol made people look like specks. How tiny we are in relation to our earth and how tiny the earth is to the universe.
When Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon he said: “One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”
Adapting this, when Jesus came down at Christmas time it was a giant step for God. Armstrong was exploring space, Jesus was on a rescue mission. Here was the creator becoming tiny.
Paul wrote that Jesus: “made himself nothing … and being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross.” God hasn’t ignored us.
The Bible tells us that he has spoken to us by his Son. A God who longs to forgive has given us the choice to accept or reject his offer of salvation to trust in Jesus.
Specks we may be, but we matter to God and to each other. Be a rescuer.
St Teresa of Avila wrote in the 14th century: “God has no hands but our hands to do his work today; God has no feet but our feet to lead others in his way; God has no voice but our voice to tell others how he died; and God has no help but our help to lead them to his side.”
