‘We are on road to recovery’ – headteacher

Parents whose children go to an “inadequate” primary school in Sudbury heard yesterday that government inspectors say it is making progress.

Following an inspection in June by Ofsted, Tudor Primary School headteacher Martin James said he had written to parents on Wednesday with the good news.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “We are pleased with the outcome. They say we are making reasonable progress and have strengthened teaching and marking.

“The inspectors were very pleased with our early years progress, and our head of early years learning, Emma Ince, will be taking up a new position as deputy head from September.

“We know we are a school in special measures, and we are not going to take our foot off the pedal, but we are pleased with the report.

“We are going to leave here today ready to start September with a bang.”

The school failed its Ofsted inspection last year with criticisms levelled at pupils’ progress in reading, writing and mathematics. But Mr James said improvements had been made which were recognised by Ofsted.

Meanwhile, Ofsted has judged Hadleigh Community Primary School as “requiring improvement” as a result of an inspection in June.

The school, which has 584 pupils, was previously rated as “good” in its previous inspection.

Ofsted said the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, and the school’s leadership and management all require improvement. The behaviour and safety of pupils was judged as good.

Headteacher Neil Jackson said changes in the Ofsted framework meant some aspects of the school’s achievements were not taken into account.

He said: “We are disappointed in the outcome, but we will not rest on our laurels. We are already taking action, and we will come back even stronger.”

Inspectors observed 22 lessons during the two-day inspection, and said they took note of 156 online responses and four letters sent from parents.
