Warning at rise in DIY piercing
A BODY piercer is warning people about the dangers of amateur piercing after seeing an alarming rise in the practice.
Trini Seabrook, manager at Inky Joes tattoo and piercing parlour in Sudbury, says she has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people using DIY piercing kits, or allowing a friend to puncture their skin in preparation for a piece of jewellery.
“I have seen a lot of piercings which have been done by people who don’t know what they are doing,” said Trini, who has 49 piercings.
“People don’t realise the dangers and they could end up with an infection, embedded jewellery or scars.”
The 25-year-old said an amateur piercing could also lead to hepatitis – an incurable disease – as people who are not properly trained do not know about safe healing, are unlikely to work in a sterile environment or have the correct equipment.
“There is a lot more to it than just sticking needles in people,” said Trini, who lives in Acton Lane.
“Someone who is inexperienced will not know how to deal with situations like controlling bleeding or fainting and cannot understand the health issues.
“I see too many people who are in pain or left with horrible scars because they thought it was acceptable to let someone who wasn’t an expert pierce them.
“It is upsetting because I am trying to keep people safe and happy.”
Trini, who has worked as a body piercer for four years and underwent training to become qualified for the role, warned those considering making a lasting impression on their body to avoid performing piercings or tattoos on themselves and their friends, or using kits from the internet, because of the potential health implications.
She said they should instead seek out registered parlours and always ask to see certificates.
“We take our job seriously and understand the risks,” said Trini.
“A good body piercer can be a resource and an inspiration, giving you a successful and safe piercing, but a bad one can cause you agony and infection.”
