Warning after drugs stolen from surgery

SHOCKED: Staff at Long Melford Veterinary Surgery which was burgled on Monday night.

Drugs stolen during a break-in at a Long Melford veterinary surgery could be fatal if they fall into the wrong hands.

The surgery in Little St Mary’s was targeted by burglars, who escaped with a cabinet containing animal medication, overnight on Monday.

Simon Culmstock, a partner at the vets, said the drugs, including somulose, fentanyl patches and methadone, were regularly used to treat family pets and were potentially dangerous.

“The drugs taken are used for animals and if there had been an emergency we wouldn’t have been able to help,” he said.

“The big concern is if someone tries to take them or gives them away, as the consequences could be fatal.”

Mr Culmstock, who has worked at the surgery for 12 years, said staff had been shocked by the burglary, which also saw charity boxes for animal charities Sesaw, Cats Protection, PDSA and the RSCPA taken.

“It is a shame because we are here to help animals which are in distress,” he said.

“The charity boxes didn’t contain a great deal, but charities are really struggling at the moment and it is sad this has happened.”

Mr Culmstock added that disruption caused by the theft had meant appointments on Tuesday morning were cancelled.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said the burglary had taken place between 10.30pm on Monday and 7.45am the next day. She added that the drugs could be harmful.
