Turn yourself in, car crash driver is urged
PLEA: Dick Knights and his grandson Damon New who suffered a broken collarbone in the crash.
The father of a woman seriously injured in a car crash has hit out at the driver who fled the scene following the accident.
Denise New suffered six broken ribs, a punctured lung and fractured vertebrae as a result of a crash on the A134 between Alpheton and Shimpling on Thursday.
Mrs New was travelling in a silver Vauxhall Corsa being driven by her son Damon, 22, when they came off the road and collided with a tree at around 4.40pm. Her 10-year-old daughter Rebecca was also in the car.
Police are hunting the driver of a blue Mazda, with a black vinyl roof, which failed to stop after the crash.
Mrs New’s father Dick Knights, from Glemsford, said his daughter had been taken to Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge by ambulance following the incident.
“From what I hear the driver of the Mazda was driving on the wrong side of the road trying to overtake five cars in one go,” said the 69-year-old.
“Damon, who was going towards Sudbury, was forced to go off the road to avoid a head on collision. After hitting the tree they all piled out as the car was smoking, but then Denise collapsed due to the pain in her back.”
Mr Knights said Damon had sustained a broken collar bone and bruising and although Rebecca escaped serious injury she had been left “traumatised” by the events.
He added that his 43-year-old daughter, from Shimpling, was unable to move in her hospital bed for three days after the crash and he wanted the “suicidal” Mazda driver, who he held responsible, to had himself in.
“I can’t put into words how angry I am about this,” said Mr Knights, a supervisor at Wiles contractors, who has recently been overseeing the revamp of Borehamgate Precinct in Sudbury.
“My daughter ended up in critical care in extreme pain and this low life drove away knowing full well what had happened.
“I wish they could know the pain that she has suffered and everything that we have been through.
“Hopefully someone’s conscience will be pricked and they will come forward, whether it is the driver or someone who knows them.”
Mr Knights, who is married to wife Louise, added that the couple’s daughter had undergone an operation on her back on Monday and was due to be moved out of critical care and to West Suffolk Hospital yesterday.
“The operation went very and if everything goes to plan she will hopefully be ok,” he said.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said officers wanted the driver of the blue Mazda, which was driving in the direction of Bury St Edmunds, to contact them.
