‘Turn down new supermarket or see shops suffer’

Planners have been warned that approving the building of a new Tesco supermarket in Hadleigh could prove “deadly” for the town’s retailers.
Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce believes the opening of Morrisons means a public inquiry calling for a new store to accompany the Co-op in High Street is now outdated.
The findings of the inquiry, which took place in 2001, had been used by Tesco to support an application to build a 2,500 square metre shop on the former Brett Works site.
Although these plans were refused in November 2011, the supermarket went back to the drawing board and submitted fresh proposals for the same land last year.
Tony Addison, president of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, said he feared planners at Babergh District Council would still think the results of the inquiry were relevant.
“If Tesco is approved, it would put two new supermarkets into the town, which is far beyond the recommended amount of food shopping space,” he said.
“The chamber believes that three supermarkets would be deadly for the town’s retailers. It feels that those people who wanted an extra supermarket now have one and that any plans for more retail space should be turned down, as the situation has changed fundamentally.”
A council spokeswoman said the application was going through the planning process.
