Train wreckage is removed from track
THE trainline between Sudbury and Marks Tey will re-open in the morning, Network Rail has confirmed.
The carriages of the stricken train were removed from the track at Little Cornard at about 5.30am this morning.
A spokesman said: "We have been checking the track over and and it's all fit and in working order.
"There were no significant repairs needed, although it was a significant incident which included quite a shunt, so it's lucky it was not worse."
The two-carriage diesel train - the 5.31pm National Express East Anglia service - was severely damaged after it smashed into a 44-tonne tanker on an unmanned level crossing on Tuesday afternoon.
A total of 21 people were injured, with one man, 58-year-old Sudbury lawyer Alan Dickinson, remaining in a critical but stable condition at Royal London Hospital.
The driver of the tanker, a 38-year-old man from Ely, Cambridgeshire, is still being interviewed by police on suspicion of endangering safety on the railway.
Detectives, who were granted more time to speak to the driver by the courts, are investigating whether Liverpool Street in London received a call from the lorry driver before the crash.
Vehicles using the unmanned crossing are meant to call through to signallers to ensure the line is clear before crossing.
National Rail said they received no phone call before the incident, which happened at about 5.40pm.
