Town gets a helping hand in bid for gold
HOPES that Sudbury may end a 10-year wait to clinch a gold award in this year’s Anglia in Bloom have been rekindled.
Doubts about the town’s participation in the annual floral competition had been called into question by Sudbury in Bloom chairman Nick Irwin, who claimed the town was weed-infested and “not up to scratch” to take part.
Now Sudbury firm, Delphi Automotive Systems, has stepped in to help ensure roundabouts, verges and paths are ready for inspection by the competition’s judges on July 10 by offering the services of 15 of its apprentices to signal fresh optimism.
The group has been working with community wardens and volunteers to spruce up the town this week.
Steve Coppock, the company’s HR manager, said: “I was talking with the town council and they told me about the problems with Anglia in Bloom and I was only too pleased to offer some help.
“Our young apprentices are working around the town for the entire week in preparation for the competition.”
Tasks carried out by the apprentices, who have been split into teams of five, include planting, pulling up weeds, and repainting railings.
Sudbury Town Council clerk Sue Brotherwood said she was hopeful the intervention of the firm would help the town maintain its proud record in the contest, in which it won a silver gilt last year, and could even result in the elusive gold award.
“We were absolutely delighted to get this offer and it is great to see these young lads giving something back to their community,” she said.
Mrs Brotherwood added that the council had also been contacted by the town’s branch of Waitrose, which has said its staff would like to lend their support to keeping the area’s floral attributes in top condition one day a month throughout the year.
“We are sure with the help from the apprentices and others we will soon have Sudbury blooming again and will do well in the competition,” she said.
