THREE grandmothers from Sudbury are taking part in a charity walk next month organised by St Nicholas Hospice Care – and the goddess-themed event calls for togas to be worn.

Lyn Chamberlin, Valerie Goodchild and Maureen Chapman are aiming to raise £500 for the hospice by walking six miles around the streets of Bury St Edmunds on September 15. The women took part in a six-mile walk last year called Girls Night Out wearing their pyjamas.

Valerie, of Elizabeth Way, said: “We are three sixty-something grandmothers who live in or near Sudbury and first met through our husbands’ shared membership of Sudbury Rotary Club, and we have since become firm friends.

“We chose St Nicholas Hospice Care because we’ve all had experience of family and friends with terminal illnesses, like those that the hospice helps.”

Lyn, from Newmans Green, Acton, is a farmer’s wife and is able to put in a few training circuits round the farm. Maureen, from Queens Road, Sudbury, is a regular walker with her daughter’s dog. Last year’s six-mile walk was the furthest Valerie had done since having a partial knee replacement.

The trio have set up a Justgiving page called Sudbury Girls in Togas, at http://www.stnicholashospice.org.uk/events/girls-night-out/sudbury-girls-in-togas.
