'Thumbs-up' for stance on animal rights
AN ANIMAL rights group has praised a town council for adopting a set of policies which aims to impact the lives of animals.
Hadleigh Town Council decided to sign-up to Animal Aid’s Compassionate Charter during a meeting of the environment and general purposes committee.
The charter consists of eight steps which the group believes are achievable such as only purchasing cruelty-free cleaning products and banning the use of plastic bags.
Councillor Trevor Sheldrick, chairman of the environment and general purposes committee, said the council was fully behind the initiative.
He said: “We looked through the list during the meeting and saw that there were things that we already did and the rest of it was quite easy to implement.
“The issue of plastic bags has come up before so we have passed the charter onto the chamber of commerce and are waiting to hear from them about how we can achieve this.
“The town council always tries to be environmentally friendly with everything we do.”
Ashley Owen, charter co-ordinator, is delighted at the town council’s decision to support the campaign.
He said: “Animal Aid is delighted that Hadleigh Town Council has taken these important steps for animal welfare, and congratulates the councillors for their compassionate stance.
“While there is always more that can be done to help animals and the planet, this is a tremendously important start, and we hope that other councils will follow Hadleigh’s admirable example.”
