FOUR-LEGGED friends fought fur with fur as Lavenham Recreation Ground was taken over by dogs and their owners on Saturday.

The show, which was organised by the Friends of Lavenham School to raise money for the village’s primary school, attracted 82 entrants across 19 categories, ranging from best in show and best cross breed to waggiest tail and prettiest bitch.

Stephen Lawrence, who organised the show, said: “There were lots of different breeds right the way through and best in show was won by Trevor, an American cocker spaniel, owned by Debbie Gaskin from Brockford near Stowmarket.”

Six-year-old Elfie Paul, who is a pupil at the primary school, was awarded reserve best in show for her labrador spaniel cross Muddy.

Stallholders selling items including food and hand-made pet cushions were joined by Mulberry Court veterinary practice in Sudbury, while owners were kept happy with a barbecue and refreshments.

“This was the first time we have done this and I have already been asked to do it next year as well,” added Mr Lawrence, who has shown dogs for 23 years and has two sons, Scott, six, and Lewis, four, at the school.

The event raised £633.25 for the school. Headteacher Jan Foster said: “We have had a lot of major alterations as we’ve taken on a Year 5 group.

“Our playground needs to be redeveloped after the work and this just means we can do all of the little extras these funds allow us to.

“It was a very popular day with the children and they all came in with their rosettes on Monday.”

CAN YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?: Scrappy, a collie cross, and Marley, a beagle, take a well-earned rest at Lavenham Dog Show.
