Takeover inches closer
SUDBURY’S bid to take over the management of its car parks is making progress.
That is the view of Tony Platt, a member of the car parking group, who told town councillors that Babergh District Council is keen to explore an alternative approach in how the car parks are managed and have no immediate plans to increase charges.
Speaking during a meeting of Sudbury Town Council’s highways and footpaths committee, Mr Platt said he had spoken to Chris Fry, head of environment at Babergh and Mid Suffolk, and received favourable feedback.
“It is a positive situation, but there is still work to be done,” said Mr Platt.
He added that the group was looking into forming a charitable organisation to run the car parks and would have more detailed information regarding the financial plan in September.
Jack Owen said he had contacted Hadleigh Town Council, which was open to the idea of being involved in the takeover.
Russell Smith said the group should be in a “strong position” as Babergh consistently fell 40 per cent short of the estimated yearly revenue for car parking.
“It doesn’t make as much money as they thought it would,” he said.
