Suffolk smokers can try a nicotine patch for a day

The Suffolk Stop Smoking Service has teamed up with local pharmacies to offer those wanting to quit smoking the chance to try out a free nicotine replacement patch for the day.

The scheme will run all day on Wednesday 11th March – which is national No Smoking Day.

Details of where people can claim their free patch-for-a-day will be advertised.

Hilary Andrews, co-ordinator of the Suffolk Stop Smoking Service said she hopes it will give people that extra encouragement to give up smoking on No Smoking Day.

She said: "People often misunderstand how nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) works and often give up the treatment because of that.

"Nicotine is released into the bloodstream within half an hour of wearing an NRT patch so anyone who gets the urge to quit on No Smoking Day can try out one out and see how much easier to quit it can be with a little help.

"Hopefully anyone who takes up the offer of a free patch for the day will feel inspired to seek out their local stop smoking service so they can go on to quit for good."

Research shows that people are four times more likely to quit smoking if they get help and support to do so.

Leaflets letting people know about participating chemists will be handed out on No Smoking Day in Ipswich Town Centre – and there will also be an appearance from Smokey the cigarette.
