Sudbury rail crash: Tanker driver still in custody
THE driver of a 44-tonne tanker involved in a collision with a passenger train in Little Cornard on Tuesday remained in custody overnight.
A court granted British Transport Police detectives more time to question the 38-year-old man from Ely, Cambridgeshire, who is being questioned on suspicion of endangering safety on the railway.
The two-carriage diesel train - the 5.31pm National Express East Anglia service – was travelling from Sudbury to Marks Tey when it struck a tanker carrying slurry to a nearby sewage works.
A total of 21 people were injured, with one man, 58-year-old Sudbury lawyer Alan Dickinson, remaining in a critical but stable condition at Royal London Hospital.
Detectives are investigating whether Liverpool Street in London received a call from the lorry driver before the crash.
Vehicles using the unmanned crossing are meant to call through to signallers to ensure the line is clear before crossing.
National Rail said they received no phone call before the incident, which happened at about 5.40pm.
