Sudbury woman celebrates 109th birthday
A LIFE encompassing both World Wars, women winning the right to vote, and the birth of flight is worth celebrating.
And that is exactly what Sudbury resident Kathleen Grimwood did as she took a family boat trip along the River Stour to mark her 109th birthday.
But her achievement is all the more remarkable given the fact that when she was born, it was not thought she would not survive.
Family friend Derek Philips said: "She was one of twins and was very weak when she was born. Doctors told her mother not to bother."
Despite this, Sudbury's oldest resident is still going strong.
"She is still mentally alert, has a modern outlook and a good sense of humour," said Mr Philips.
"Friends are always popping into see her and she has a memory like a book. It's fantastic."
Born in 1901 in a house in Edgworth Road, Sudbury, Mrs Grimwood, who never married, was invited to meet the Queen in 2008.
This year, a slice of birthday cake and an outing on the river provided all the excitement she required.
