Sudbury restaurant to become pizzeria

AN Italian restaurant in Sudbury looks set to become a Pizza Express.

Sudbury town councillors recommended the planning application for illuminated signs and a menu box at Ask Italian, on Market Hill, for approval last week.

The restaurant had been listed for sale with estate agents Fleurets for £45,000 for several months and is now marked as “under offer”.

Both Pizza Express and Ask Italian are owned by Gondola Holdings, which has more than 600 restaurants across the UK.

Neither restaurant chain could be reached for a comment.

Pizza Express will become Sudbury’s third specialist pizza eatery, with the town already hosting Pizza Town, which recently became takeaway-only, and Domino’s.

Commenting on the Free Press’ Facebook page, Joy Hayward said: “Sudbury is now dead and needs bringing back to life.

“We have nothing here and no one is interested in shopping here anymore. We need clothes shops for every age.”

Jenny Hay said: “It’s already an Italian pizza restaurant, it’ll just be using a different name. It would be nice to see Sudbury get a different variety of shops, but they have to get through council red tape first and that’s a challenge in itself.”

Steve Andrews claimed: “It is a waste of time asking us shoppers what we want, we are never listened to.”

And Gary Ridgway added: “Another restaurant? I think we need another bookies.”

The plans will go before Babergh District Council at a later date.
