A footpath which runs alongside a Sudbury supermarket will stay closed while it is examined by Suffolk County Council over safety fears.

The path near to the town’s Sainsbury’s store, which connects Newton Road and Great Cornard, was closed in May after concerns over the safety of the ground.

A county council spokesman said: “While carrying out recent improvement works, there were concerns raised about the stability of the ground.”

“In light of these concerns, we have had to temporarily close the path to ensure public safety.

“This is a complicated situation that requires geo-technical data to be evaluated, so the process will take some time to conclude.”

As part of the Sainsbury’s development, £55,000 was spent on the footpath. A petition has been started by residents to get it reopened.
