Sudbury and Hadleigh benefits roadshow

A series of roadshows are set to be held to help people understand changes to housing and council tax benefit payments that come into effect in April.

Babergh District Council is staging them at Magdalen Road car park in Hadleigh on February 16, on Market Hill in Sudbury on March 2, and at the Village Square car park in Bildeston on March 16.

The council says anyone of working age who is living in a council or housing association home deemed bigger than they need will see a reduction in their housing benefit entitlement.

Those with one spare bedroom will have their housing benefit cut by 14 per cent, and those with two or more spare bedrooms face a 25 per cent reduction.

The Government’s new universal credit will be introduced in the autumn to replace a number of benefits with a single monthly payment.

Louise Rawsthorne, the council’s housing manager, said: “This is the first time we have held roadshows to explain welfare reform changes. Officers and tenants will be on hand to explain what the changes will mean.”

The sessions will run between 9am and noon.
