Students to take chance to 'Shine'
STUDENTS at Sudbury Upper School and Arts College will prove they have got talent at next week's Shine celebration.
Shine Week which began last year showcases young people's talents of all kinds and focuses on their achievements countrywide.
Schools across Suffolk are taking part and Sudbury Upper is holding daily events open to the public.
On Monday an “Oscars” awards evening at the Quay Theatre at 7.30pm will celebrate the work of the most talented students and include a presentation of awards.
Sudbury Young Stars on Tuesday features children from all over the area aged nine to 15 presenting extracts from the musical Barnum in the upper school auditorium at 5pm.
Also on Tuesday, ten sixth formers, who have been working in partnership with the Gecko Theatre at the Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, are giving a performance with students from Deben High School at the Sudbury Arts Centre at 7.30pm.
Wednesday’s event is a concert with pupils from Uplands, All Saints’ and Clare Middle Schools joining upper school students in the auditorium at 7pm.
Art is featured on Thursday with a private view of work by GCSE and A-level students at 6pm. Waitrose is awarding prizes to the best three pictures which will be on display in the store's cafe.
A community dance festival also takes place on Thursday involving students from primary, middle and upper schools in the auditorium at 4.30pm.
The week culminates with the final of the school’s Sudbury's Got Talent show on Friday at 1.30pm. The show has been organised by the sixth form to raise money for the talent bursary fund.
This year’s recipient from the fund is 18-year-old Aidan Napier who has won a place at the National Youth Theatre's summer school and has to raise 800 to cover his costs.
Sudbury Upper’s performing arts co-ordinator Lesley Turner said: "This is the second year we've been involved in Shine Week and it really does highlight talent in young people. It draws attention to the huge array of talent in the school and local area.
“The other benefit is it helps people believe everyone has a talent of some kind and it gives us the chance to celebrate and nurture it. Last year there was a real buzz about the place and I'm sure it'll be the same again.”
Anyone wishing to attend the events should contact student services on 01787 375131, ext 214.
Shine Week kicks off nationally on Monday with youngsters from across the country taking part in a rooftop street dance on the south bank of the Thames as part of a new music video and symbolising Shine bursting out of the classroom and on to the streets.
