Strike action postponed

FIRE service union members reached an agreement this week to call off further strikes.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), including firefighters in Halstead and Sible Hedingham, were due to strike yesterday in a show of opposition to proposed cuts to frontline crews in Essex.

However, the walk-out was postponed after a breakthrough in talks between the FBU and fire service chiefs.

“Talks on all the issues in dispute have continued throughout August and further progress was made at crucial meetings on Tuesday,” said Matt Wrack, general secretary of the FBU.

“I understand that both sides believe they are close to producing detailed proposals that may be sufficient to bring the dispute to an end.

“I had no hesitation in supporting the recommendation of our negotiating team that the strike be postponed.”

The FBU claims reducing the number of firefighters would put lives in danger.

Further strike action planned for October 18 remains in place.
