A man who spent more than six weeks squatting at a former Great Cornard pub has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance.

David Vernon, 46, was tasered and then arrested by police after he refused to leave Highbury Barn in Canhams Road on May 22.

He was taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds as a precaution after initially being taken for questioning.

On Friday, Vernon, of Mallard Way, attended Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court charged with using threatening and abusive behaviour, which he denies.

Vernon was remanded in custody until tomorrow, when he is due to appear back in court.
