COMMITTED: Sean Harvey, a Suffolk County Council social worker, was presented with a certificate for his 33 years of service at a party.

A DEDICATED social worker was rewarded for 33 years of service with a party on Thursday.

Sean Harvey celebrated his retirement from Suffolk County Council’s adult and community services in Friars Street, Sudbury, with friends, family and colleagues at the Brook Inn in Great Cornard.

He was presented with a certificate for long and excellent service by social care manager Andrew Croft.

Mr Harvey, who worked at Walnuttree Hospital for a number of years and has been involved in care of the elderly since 1988, said: “It has been very interesting and I have met lots of nice people, both members of the public and colleagues.

“The best part has been working with people, seeing them healthy and happy at home if possible, and if not then appropriately placed in residential care.”

He added that, while the ageing population meant that more and more people needed care and the work had taken on more business-like dimensions over the years, he had enjoyed his career.

“It has been a very good three decades,” said Mr Harvey, who lives in Saffron Walden with his wife Julie and has two children, Adam, 24, and Lucy, 26.

“Public service is important and it is nice that I have enjoyed it too.”

Although he is retiring, Mr Harvey does not plan to lead a quiet life.

“I hope to travel and I am going to climb a Slovenian mountain next year,” he said. “I also like to kayak down the River Stour and other Suffolk rivers.”

David Evans, who worked alongside Mr Harvey for many years, added: “Sean has been very interesting to work with and a source of great knowledge on all things to do with social care.”
