Sarah gets all fired up for torch relay
A LONG Melford woman is preparing for her moment in the spotlight when she carries the Olympic torch through Bury St Edmunds on Saturday.
Sarah Farley, 28, from Cordell Road, will carry the flame from Greene King in Westgate Street to Crown Street in front of thousands of onlookers at 4.12pm.
“I am excited but anxious,” said Miss Farley, who received her white tracksuit with its gold London 2012 logo last week. “It has made it more real and seeing how many people are coming out to see the relay and hearing other torch-carriers’ stories about why they are doing it is a bit overwhelming,” she added.
Miss Farley, who lives with her fiancé Ben Boxall and works as an assistant buyer at Greene King, was nominated by her friends to be a Coca Cola ‘Future Flame’ because of her enthusiasm and positivity. Her dad Bob also has a keen interest in Olympic postmarks and stamps and she has visited the games in Salt Lake City and Beijing.
“I have told all my close friends, family and work colleagues when I’m running,” she said, adding that her family had been given a banner with her name on and a drum to add to the atmosphere.
She will meet the relay bus at Abbeycroft Leisure Centre at 1.30pm before joining the procession, getting out in time for the “kiss”, when her torch is lit from the previous runner’s.
She will then run her 300-metre stretch.
Miss Farley is keen to pass on the story of her special day, and will be visiting Long Melford and Acton primary schools to show pupils her torch and give a talk.
