MR MARATHON MAN: Jem Smith, from Sudbury, will be runing four marathons in four days for the Free Press Megan Roper Appeal.

IMAGINE the dedication and training that goes into running a marathon – the sweat and tears, and the hours spent pounding the pavements.

Now double the intensity that completing 26.2 miles brings and you still fall someway short of the gruelling challenge Sudbury’s Jem Smith has set himself.

The 38-year-old, who lives in St Bartholomews Lane, has signed up to run four marathons on four consecutive days as part of The Great Barrow Challenge.

Mr Smith will be pushing himself to the limit to finish the remarkable feat of endurance for our Megan Roper appeal.

Although a member of Sudbury Joggers and a veteran of 16 marathons, he admits preparations have not been all plain sailing.

“The training is killing me,” said Mr Smith, who has been clocking up an average of 75 miles a week.

“It is finding the time to do it all between juggling work, daily life and family that is the problem.”

It is the motivation of adding to the £300 in sponsorship he has already raised for the appeal for five-year-old Megan that keeps him going.

“I thought the appeal would give me a great incentive and is something close to home,” said Mr Smith, who is married to Carol and works at Heath Farm in Acton.

q To sponsor him, call him on 07779 498405 or visit the Free Press to donate to the appeal.
