A GREAT Cornard man is beginning 2012 with a great deal less hair thanks to a charity fundraiser.

Robert Willingham, from Languidic Close, had his head shaved at the King’s Arms pub to raise money for the Guide Dogs charity and a defibrillator for Hintlesham Golf Club.

But as he discovered, no hair is safe when a good cause is involved.

“I have a little goatee beard and everybody had a whip-round in the pub to get me to shave it off as well,” said Mr Willingham, who works as a tarmacer.

“I said ‘it’s not coming off until you put your hands in your pockets’, so my wife went round with a bucket and got about £60 and that was shaved off too,” he added.

Mr Willingham decided to split the money between the two charities after his boss of 26 years began to lose his sight due to glaucoma, and a golf club member suffered a heart attack last year.

The haircut was done by Claire Cockburn, from Alcatraz hairdressers in Gaol Lane, Sudbury, and has helped raise around £800.

“I’m still collecting now,” said Mr Willingham. “Since I have had it done, people have noticed and are making donations.”

He hopes to raise a total of £2,500, which would mean the golf club’s half would cover the cost of the equipment.
