Residents out in force against village homes
More than 100 residents packed into Long Melford Village Hall on Tuesday night to voice their opposition to amended plans for 51 homes.
David Wilson Homes presented its latest proposals for the former Fleetwood caravan factory site in Hall Street, which have been submitted to Babergh District Council.
Jon Jennings, director of Pegasus Planning Group, explained that the amended plans included 102 parking spaces with eight for visitors.
Residents questioned the developers for nearly two hours, with criticisms including access to the site and extra traffic movements of up to 300 cars per day, the density and number of properties, the lack of parking provision and the failure to provide employment opportunities on the site.
Councillor Judi Walton said: “The developer won’t do anything about these issues unless Babergh or Suffolk County Council tell it to.”
Both she and parish clerk Gordon Mussett urged people to voice objections to Babergh’s planning department.
Residents also called for county and district council officers to meet with them.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Biggs said: “We were happy to respond to concerns raised by residents and the discussions were very helpful in clarifying a couple of areas, such as access and traffic movements, where we want to take more time to review our proposed plans for the access to the site.”
He added that consultation exercises showed some residents supported the plans due to the new homes provision and knock-on effects to the village.
