A homeless man squatting at a former pub in Great Cornard has been evicted after being tasered and then arrested by police.
Officers carried out an operation to remove David Vernon from Highbury Barn in Canhams Road this morning after an eviction notice was issued by the High Court.
A number of police cars were seen outside the building and officers were forced to take action after he refused to leave.
A spokeswomen for Suffolk Police said: “After eviction paperwork was issued from the High Court, officers attended the address but the man was not compliant.
“A 46-year-old man was tasered at the scene and arrested on suspicion of affray and failing to attend court.
“Once being taken into custody at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre, it was decided the man should be taken to West Suffolk Hospital as a precaution.”
Mr Vernon had been living at Highbury Barn, which closed as a pub in November 2012, for more than six weeks. He had told the Free Press he had no intention of leaving and had plans to start teaching yoga in the building’s rear extension.
Earlier this month, the pub’s owner, Punch Taverns, was granted permission to demolish the existing extension and build a new one – allowing the firm to push ahead with efforts to turn the building into a supermarket.
