Protesters step up anti-Tesco campaign
CAMPAIGNERS opposing plans by supermarket giant Tesco to build a new store in Hadleigh took their protest to the skies on Saturday.
Over 400 people of all ages turned out for Hands off Hadleigh's open air day at Bridge Street Car Park to add their voices to the fight to stop a new store being built on the old Brett Works site.
Organisers said they were delighted with the turnout following concerns that attendance would be hit by Babergh District Council's last-minute cancellation of a meeting yesterday to consider Tesco's planning application.
Mike Pearson, of Hands off Hadleigh, thanked people for huge turnout.
He said: "The fact that so many supported the event, despite the heat and the cancellation of the Babergh planning committee meeting, demonstrates that we do not want a Tesco on this site.
"We don't care if it's Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, Somerfield, Co-op or Asda - we don't want any supermarket on the River Brett site."
As well as their access and safety concerns, Hands off Hadleigh is worried about the potential loss of allotments, increased traffic congestion and the impact on riverside wildlife, the surrounding conservation area, the nearby nature reserve and existing High Street shops.
