Poppy appeal launched in Sudbury

Mayor Jack Owen has officially launched The Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal in Sudbury.
The appeal was launched outside the town hall on Saturday, with shoppers encouraged to stop to look at a military vehicle stationed outside. The legion had a stand displaying details of the welfare work it does within the community.
Remembrance Day services will be preceded by a parade in Great Cornard and Sudbury on Sunday, November 11.
In Great Cornard, the parade leaves opposite the Kings Head in Bures Road at 9.50am for a 10.15am service in St Andrew’s Church.
After the service, wreaths will be laid at the war memorial and the parade will march through Church Road and Broom Street to the Stevenson Centre.
In Sudbury, the parade will be led by the Colchester Pipe Band and leaves Market Hill at 2pm for a 2.30pm service at St Gregory’s Church.
After a wreath laying, the parade will march along New Street and North Street to the Old Market Place where a salute will be taken outside the town hall by the mayor, the deputy lieutenant of Suffolk, Col Paul Long, OBE, and Peter Maybury, president of the Sudbury branch of the legion.
Poppy appeal organiser Rod Kilby said new collectors are needed to help until Saturday, November 10. If you can spare an hour collecting at a supermarket or house-to-house, call Mr Kilby on 01787 373948.
