Police object to club’s boxing plan

PLANS to stage boxing and wrestling matches at a Sudbury nightclub have been met with opposition.

Easterns Station Lounge in Station Road submitted an application for a variation of its premises licence to Babergh District Council last month.

Under the proposals, the venue would be able to hold boxing and wrestling events anytime from 10am to 1am between Sunday and Thursday.

The club’s owner, Dave Pratt, has said the application, if granted, would allow Sudbury Boxing Club to hold bouts there.

Mr Pratt’s grandson, Charlie, 14, and stepsons, Callum, 16, and Billy Lloyd, 11, are all members of the town’s boxing club.

However, Suffolk Police have said the application should not be approved, claiming the move would risk public safety and hamper the prevention of crime and disorder.

Becky Kidd-Stanton, the force’s licensing inspector, said the proposed removal of female door supervisors and the requirement to have a personal licence holder at the club at all times when alcohol was being served, during boxing and wrestling events, was a worry.

“These variations, we believe, will reduce the ability of the premises to uphold the licensing objectives,” she said.

“Our concern is that public safety may be compromised unless proper control measures are put in place to mitigate any risk.”

James Buckingham, environmental protection officer for Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils, said he supported the police’s objections and questioned why the club planned to re-admit customers who had left, despite this causing issues with control and policing outside the premises in the past.

A hearing to determine the application will be held by members of Babergh’s licensing sub-committee on August 22.
