Perseverance is the key, say diamond couple
DIAMOND COUPLE: Bsil and Pat Pilgrim toast 60 years of marriage with a celebratory glass of champagne.
TOLERANCE, perseverance and love are the key requirements for a long and successful marriage, say to a couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Basil and Pat Pilgrim got married in St Andrew’s Church, Great Cornard, on August 16, 1952.
They have lived in Bures all their married life and have three children, Susan, Kevin and David, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Retired builder Basil, 84, who was a Bures parish councillor for 57 years, and was its longest-serving chairman, took over from his father and grandfather before him to run Pilgrim Builders. It is now run by Basil’s son, Kevin.
Mrs Pilgrim, who is 82, said: “We have lived in the same house for over 50 years and our children have all lived close by – at one time they all lived in Bures too.”
Commenting on their long and happy marriage, Mrs Pilgrim said: “I think you have just got to be tolerant of one another and you have to try to make it work.
“We are happy and love one another but everyone has their ups and downs. You have to work through them and keep on trying.”
The couple are planning a party and barbecue for family and friends at the Thatcher’s Arms, in Mount Bures.
They are raising money for the British Heart Foundation and the Stroke Association and have asked for donations in lieu of presents.
