Pc kicked in the face five times by drunk lout
A man who deliberately kicked a police officer in the face five times has been banned from pubs and clubs in Sudbury and Great Cornard.
Robert Battell, of Constable Road in Sudbury, had been out drinking at the Silkworm pub when he got into an argument with police on January 20.
The 26-year-old shouted abuse at officers and used extreme sexual swear words before “struggling violently” to resist arrest, Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Emma Howson said officers on duty in East Street had approached Battell, who pleaded guilty to charges of assaulting an officer and being drunk and disorderly, at about 1.10am after they saw him arguing with another man.
Mrs Howson told magistrates that Battell had been warned about his language and told to move on.
“After walking seven or eight paces, he turned back and said ‘we pay your wages, you only stopped us for something to do’ and stuck two fingers up,” she said.
Battell then ran off and was chased by Pc Leon Mower. After being caught, Battell went towards Pc Mower with his hands raised, but the officer knocked him off balance.
During the course of a struggle, Pc Mower’s glasses were knocked off and his earpiece damaged.
As he was taken to the ground by officers, Battell swore and shouted at them and caught Pc Mower on the leg when kicking out, Mrs Howson said.
