Outdoor ice rink set to kick off festivities

An outdoor ice rink is to form the centrepiece of Sudbury’s Christmas festivities.

The town council is aiming to transform Market Hill into a winter wonderland with a temporary ice rink ready for its late-night shopping Christmas Fair next month.

There will also be a festive children’s magic show, Santa’s grotto, children’s rides and groups singing.

Sudbury Town Council clerk Sue Brotherwood said she hoped all the effort going into the event on November 30 would get people in the Christmas spirit.

“The event marks the beginning of our Christmas festivities and is when we switch on the Christmas lights,” she said.

“Traditionally, this is one of the town’s biggest events but it has lost a bit of sparkle in recent years and we want to bring that back.

“We hope it will be very popular again this year as it is not every day you have the opportunity to ice skate outdoors.”

A number of Christmas-themed craft stalls will be set up in North Street and around St Peter’s.

Profits raised by the ice rink, which is being funded by a donation from Tesco, will go towards an appeal in support of Go START, Helping Hands, Edens Project, AFC Grassroots and the Quay Theatre.
