A police officer was injured in a high-speed chase when a pair of suspected burglars began throwing their haul from their getaway car.

Police began their high-speed persuit after a van sped past them on the A134 and failed to stop.

The officer followed the van into Valley Road in Newton when garden machinery was suddenly thrown from the suspects’ vehicle, hitting the police car.

The offenders stopped and ran off. The police officer, who was driving at the time, sustained injuries and was taken to Colchester Hospital.

Police believe the chase was connected to two burglaries in Assington which they are currently investigating.

A storage shed was broken into at a business in The Street between 3pm on Monday, June 16, and 8pm the following day.

Items stolen included a mechanical wood splitter, lawnmower, a quantity of red diesel and chainsaw trousers.

A white van with orange lights was seen driving away from the scene.
