Nominate your community hero

UNSUNG heroes who give up their free time and help make an invaluable contribution to the community are being sought.

Babergh District Council is on the lookout for young people, individuals, voluntary groups and businesses who help make the area where they live or work special.

The council is keen to honour those who make a difference and is asking for nominations as it launches its 21st annual community achievement awards.

“We want to celebrate by awarding those really special people in our communities who give up their time voluntarily to serve others,” said the authority’s community development officer, Kate Lowe.

“These awards are what working with the community is all about, giving those who make outstanding contributions to their community the recognition and appreciation they deserve.”

Nomination forms have already been sent to schools, parish and town councils, businesses, voluntary groups and charities.

Award categories include:

l Outstanding contribution made by a young person or group of young people 18 years or under.

l Selfless service by an individual (over 18) to a voluntary body or to the community.

l Voluntary or community group that improves the quality of life for residents in the district.

l Outstanding business contribution to the well-being of the community.

This year, the judging panel’s special award went to The Porch Project, which is run by St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh. It was founded three years ago as a safe place for young people to meet and has 25 volunteers.

“Without these special individuals, our towns and villages would not thrive and grow and this is a fantastic opportunity to honour their dedication and commitment with a community award,” added Mrs Lowe.

The deadline for nominations is November 30, with judging taking place in early December. All winners will be notified by Christmas and invited to an awards ceremony being held at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club in March 2013.
